Angels send Millville grad to next level

The Los Angeles Angels have seen enough of Mike Trout.

Amid what can only be described as a historic minor-league season, the 2009 Millville High School graduate and first-round draft pick was promoted to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (Class A advanced, California League) following Friday's game, in which he played for the Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Kernels (Class A, Midwest League).

"I didn't hear any word of it before the game. But after the game, they called me into the manager's office with the coaches and told me right there," Trout said Saturday evening by telephone from Anaheim, Calif.

"They told me I would be staying in California. I was thrilled. It's a good opportunity to show what I have and move up in the system."

The 25th overall pick in the 2009 draft, Trout is in Anaheim -- home of the Angels -- to play in today's All-Star Futures game at Angel Stadium. At 18, he was the youngest player selected to play in the 12th annual game, which can be seen at 6 p.m. on ESPN2.

In his final game with Cedar Rapids, Trout went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. He expects to join his new teammates Monday.

"Going into the season, I set high goals for myself," the outfielder said before leaving for a community-service activity at an Anaheim-area hospital. "I wanted to succeed. I got the chance to move up, and I'm very excited about it."

Told that the organization wanted him to get a full year of pro ball under his belt, Trout expected to spend the entire season in Cedar Rapids. Apparently, his play was simply too good to be held back any longer.

At the end of play Friday, Trout led the Midwest League in batting (.362), runs (76), hits (113), stolen bases (45) and on-base percentage (.454). He was second in OPS (on-base plus slugging percentages at .979) and fourth in slugging (.526).

The 2009 Courier-Post Player of the Year also had 19 doubles, seven triples and six home runs as the Kernels' leadoff hitter and starting center fielder.

Trout is ranked No. 2 by Baseball America on its Top 25 midseason prospects list behind Phillies' Triple-A outfielder Domonic Brown. The list was compiled by John Manuel and released on Baseball America.com before Friday's games.
